07 Feb 2021 ArcGIS Online year in review
It was a year of changing for the better of Esri. Looking back on 2021, Esri had done a lot of amazing works to continuously enhance user experiences. We’ve gathered some of the interesting changes and improvements in 4 major releases of ArcGIS Online for you.
April 2021
- The new Map Viewer, formerly known as Map Viewer Beta, is available for general use. This next generation map making tool provides new ways to visualize data and build compelling web maps. New features and capabilities were added such as sketch layers, interface improvements, charts, and the create app experience. The original Map Viewer is now called Map Viewer Classic.
- New ArcGIS Dashboards is out of beta. The new version added support for ArcGIS Arcade and improved performance. The previous version of Dashboards is called ArcGIS Dashboards Classic.

June 2021
- ArcGIS Image for ArcGIS Online is introduced, an extension designed to help you manage, interpret, analyze, and share imagery data. It enables you to easily host imagery in the cloud, eliminating the need to manage your own infrastructure.
- New item button on the content page were added to ArcGIS Online for better adding content experience. Another improved experience also includes support for dragging and dropping files such as CSV, PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, and images.

September 2021
Many new features and capabilities were introduced to Map Viewer. One of them is Effects, it lets you create expressive maps using creative visualizations that can be applied to basemaps and layers. Choose from effects like drop shadow, bloom, blur, grayscale, brightness and contrast, and more to achieve the desired results.

December 2021
You can now use filters in Map Viewer to apply effects to specific features or the entire layer. For example, applying drop shadow and transparency to highlight features in a specific province polygon has never been easier!
